Looking for a way to casually talk your partner or best friend into doing yoga with you? Tell them this class has partner yoga massage!

That’s right! We are exploring all the fun of simple yoga stretches with a partner. But there’s also the added bonus of a partner massage tutorial that you’re not gonna want to miss!

Grab your friend, SO, sister, or whoever and hit the mat! Actually, you don’t even need a yoga mat for this one, but you know what I mean.

Partner Yoga Massage

Before we begin, make sure you and your partner are relaxed and ready to have some fun. Don’t take things too seriously and more importantly – communicate!

The video has WAY more poses and, of course, the yummy massage at the end. However, if you want a quick breakdown of some of the best poses, I got you covered:

Connect with Breathwork

Before diving straight into the stretches, take some time to connect. We always want to spend time dropping into our own presence and our breath before practice. With a partner, it’s nice to do this together.

Try matching your breath pattern to your partners and see if you can both deepen the breath together. Start to bring in the energy of trust and play. If you’re really into it, do a little eye gazing.

This is a good time to remind each other to communicate throughout the practice on what feels good. As I remind you in the video, it’s good to let your partner know when you would like a deeper stretch versus when they need to back off a little bit.

Back-to-Back Seated Twist

Sitting back to back (on a cushion or block if needed), allow your legs to cross comfortably and sit tall in the spine. Together on an inhale, reach both hands overhead. On the exhale, both twist to their right side, continuing to lift through the spine. Your right hand may rest on their left thigh and your left hand will rest of your right thigh.

Continue to lift through the spine on the inhale and try twisting deeper on the exhale. See if you can match your rhythm with your partner’s.

Assisted Forward Fold

While sitting back-to-back, link arms with your partner and decide who will fold forward first. Take a nice inhale together and on the exhale, the first partner will fold forward as the second partner relaxes onto their back. The partner who is folding forward should focus on relaxing the neck and shoulders as much as possible.

Assisted Wide-Legged Forward Fold

Sit facing each other and bring the legs as wide as is comfortable. Make sure that you are sitting up on the tailbone and feel free to sit up on a cushion or block. Shuffle towards each other until one partner’s feet are rested on the legs of the other and both feel like they’re getting a tiny bit of a stretch.

Grab hands or forearms, whatever is most comfortable for reach and flexibility. Take a big inhale together and on the exhale, the first partner will fold forward and the second partner will fold back.

Communication in this partner yoga pose is important! Be sure to communicate if you would like to be pulled deeper into the pose or would like less.

Assisted Extended Child’s Pose

Partner one – Get into Extended Child’s Pose. From hands and knees, bring the big toes together and take the knees out as wide as the mat. Sit back onto the heels and walk the hands forward, bringing the forehead down onto the mat. Allow the belly to drop between the thighs and sink into the hips. Reach through the fingertips, but allow the shoulder blades to stay in place.

Partner two – Bring flat palms to your partners low back, fingers facing outwards, and begin to apply pressure on the low back. Communicate how much weight they would like you to add to their back.
